Hudobníci: Ladislav Kupkovič

SK 2015 | Dir: Gyorgy Kristof | 26 min

Documentary portrait of the late Slovak composer and conductor Ladislav Kupkovič. Kupkovič began his career as a violinst for the Slovak Philharmonic orchestra in the 1960s and composed scores for film and television to make a living. At the same time, he was writing more experimental music for concerts. Kupkovič found himself increasingly subject to government oppression for his support of avantgarde music. In 1969 he won a music scholarship to West Berlin, and emigrated there the following year. In 1971, he conducted the premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Mixtur in Cologne, a piece dedicated to Kupkovič himself. Kupkovič became associated with the Cologne School of music and also taught music theory.

Kupkovič is known for expanding time and space of musical performance through his Wandelkonzerte, often compared to John Cage, and for his lifting incidental parts of classical works out of their original contexts, rendering them unrecognizable, and building new works upon them.
